Important Note: Certification for individual compasses (MED certificate) must be strictly requested at the time of order. It cannot be issued at a later date.
Certification and Compliance of RIVIERA Compasses
RIVIERA compasses are certified through a modular process supervised by the certification body R.I.N.A., which includes testing in line with the MED Directive 2014/90/EU and ISO 25862 / IEC 60945 standards.
- Type Approval (Module B): R.I.N.A. examines the technical design and certifies its initial compliance.
- Production Quality Assurance (Module D): Riviera’s production process is audited to ensure that every compass maintains the standards of the approved prototype.
Every certified compass is accompanied by a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) issued by Riviera. This document certifies the compass’s compliance with the required directive and standards and is valid for 4 years from the date of issue.
Traceability and On-Board Requirements
To satisfy approval and testing procedures, every magnetic compass must be uniquely identifiable. This system is built on three pillars:
- Physical Identifier: A serial number is always engraved, stamped, or printed on a permanent plate on the compass body.
- Model Indication: The approved model is explicitly specified on the DoC.
- Serial Number Matching: The same serial number found on the compass is indicated on the DoC. This guarantees a direct link between the physical instrument and its documentation.
The Importance of Inspections
Crucial Note: Perfect alignment between the instrument and its documentation is vital.
During inspections by the Coast Guard, technical bodies, or classification societies, officials will verify that the installed compass is exactly the one covered by the DoC.
The absence of a serial number or a mismatch with the documents makes it impossible to prove the instrument’s compliance, risking disputes and penalties during inspections.
