ON-BOARD MAGNETIC COMPASS COMPENSATION SERVICE
Yachts or commercial vessels
A Magnetic compass calibration is the process of measuring compass errors for magnetic interference (deviation) from the metal parts and electronics ensuring accurate heading readings by turning to known points, comparing compass readings to a true reference , while compensation is the process of physically correcting these errors using internal or external magnets and soft iron correctors to ensure accuracy.
While the equipment is certified, it must be adjusted by an authorized professional upon installation and periodically thereafter (typically at least every two years) and a table of residual deviations must be kept on board at all times.
- Deviation: Metal parts and electrical fields create interference, causing the compass to point inaccurately.
- Accuracy: To ensure the compass points to magnetic north as closely as possible, minimizing navigational errors.
- Regular Maintenance: Performed periodically (e.g., annually) or after significant events like lightning strikes, hard landings, or major electronic changes.

MED CERTIFICATION SERVICE
Certification for individual compasses:
MED certificate must be requested when ordering, as it can’t be issued later.
MED (Marine Equipment Directive) certification for RIVIERA magnetic compasses ensures that the equipment meets mandatory European safety and performance standards for use on non-military seagoing vessels.
Directive: Currently governed by Directive 2014/90/EU.
The Wheelmark: Products that pass MED certification are marked with the Wheelmark symbol, indicating compliance with EU maritime safety requirements.
Regulatory Sources: Standards are derived from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) resolutions, the SOLAS Convention (specifically Chapter V, Regulation 19), and European Standards (EN).
Classification & Standards
Compasses are typically certified under specific categories:
Class A: Primary magnetic compasses for large ships.
Class B: Intended for lifeboats and rescue boats.
Technical Testing: Certification includes environmental and EMC testing according to IEC 60945.
Certification Process (Modules)
To achieve and maintain certification, RIVIERA must follow a modular process:
Module B (Type Examination): The Notified Body – R.I.N.A. , examines the technical design and issues an EC-Type Examination Certificate.
Module D/E/F (Production Surveillance): These modules focus on the quality system and production phase. Module D (Production Quality Assurance) is the most common requirement to ensure every unit produced matches the approved type.
Declaration of Conformity (DoC): The manufacturer must sign a DoC for each unit, stating it complies with the MED.
Compliance Requirements
Safety Distances: Certified compasses must specify a “compass safe distance” to prevent interference from other electronics.
